My New Favourite Thing

My Usa-chan!!!

No, that's not some weird kind of euphemism. It's a rabbit.

Oh, and Skinny who bought him for me. Even though she doesn't know who Astro Boy is (!) I still love her anyway. And today she turned 22! Otanjou-bi Omedetou Gozaimasu Skinny-chan!

I Voted For Kat Stratford

Okay, so feel free to skip this post.

The truth is, I'm more than a little bit heartbroken right now. I know that's stupid and pathetic and you're all thinking badly of me as you read this. But I really, really loved 10 Things. I never expected to, but I was hooked by the second episode. Hooked on Katrick.

Hell, they got them back together so perfectly. Instead of him begging her not to leave or making some stupid declaration, which would have been so out of character, in the end he was just there.

The finale made me cry. More than once.

Thank you 10 Things. You've made my Tuesdays something to look forward to. You've distracted me. You've made me laugh. You've made me scream. You know the truth? These are feelings of love (insider joke).

And just for you, a list.

Top 10 10 Things Moments:

10. The French Film Make-Out Prep (Episode 17)

9. Give It Time (Episode 16)

8. "You're Obsessed With Me" (Episode 4)

7. Patrick Climbs Through The Window (Episode 7)

6. Kat and Bianca's sisterly bonding (Episode 8)

5. The Sexy Garage Scene (a.k.a. Mr Darcy in the Lake) (Episode 5)

4. The motorcycle getaway (Episode 10)

2. Kat and Cameron rap (Episode 20)

1. THAT kiss (Episode 7)

My New Favourite Thing

Awesome Music On Even More Awesome Shows!!!

From Sonic Youth and Massive Attack on Gossip Girl to Filthy Souls and Carolina Liar on 10 Things. Wicked tunes on tv make a music nazi like me ecstatic! Not only is it a great way to discover new bands, but there is nothing better than when the music just fits the scene like a glove.

Gossip Girl are experts at this. Bloc Party's 'Changes' is now one of my absolute favourites due to the iconic funeral scenes it was used as a musical background for. It's still the only show that has done a Vampire Weekend tune justice. Throwing in Conor Oberst's 'Gone NYC Gone' was sheer genius. And when they used Manchester Orchestra's 'I Can Feel A Hot One' for the indian summer episode.... ah perfection.

The power of tv in the music industry is not to be underestimated. After all, anyone seen that John Lewis ad with the Billy Joel cover by Fyfe Dangerfield? Well, it's been in iTunes top 10 songs for over a fortnight...

My Bunny The Rock Star

Hot days can be tough. Particularly if you're wearing a fur coat.

Fye usually loves nothing more than snoozing in a nice patch of sun. But this weekend has been too hot for even him. I came down this morning to find him huddled up in the shade at the back of his run. He thoroughly enjoyed me dripping some cold water on his face but could hardly even find the energy to nibble a little cabbage.

Still, by the late afternoon he is the essence of chill. He lies around, occasionally throwing himself on his back to get a more comfortable position. He enjoys the coming and goings of us through the patio near his run and my brother playing music out in the garden.

It's obviously a hard life, being a rabbit. But my Fye makes it look easy :)

My New Favourite Thing

There's a McDonalds just above Victoria Station, where I pass through every weekday (and many weekends) on my commute. And when I've had a hard day... well, there's nothing to boost morale like the promise of a sweet treat whilst I wait for my train.

I'm not a huge McD's fan. They use too much unnecessary sauce (mayo, ketchup, special sauce... yuck). And I loathe McFlurries. Gnarly. But I'm a Sundae addict - it's official.

Right Where They Left

You know that moment when you're with someone, and it all feels... wrong? Awkward? Confusing? Weird? And you think, 'fuck, what do I say next? how the fuck do I make this normal?'

I've been having them a lot.

My Mother says I'm out of sorts. In Mother language this means there's nothing wrong with me, but I'm acting weird. Which is about right. And, if I don't get my head together, things are about to get a whole lot weirder.

I'm saying weird a lot. I apologise.

So, it's not you, it's me. And all that kind of talk. This one needs more than Patrick Verona and ice-cream sundaes to solve. I know right, what cannot Patrick Verona solve? I bet if he was here in person he could solve it. Like this:

Then he'd kick some ass in his leather jacket and ride away on his bike (which he didn't have in the film but he so should have).

I digress.

Dan ran six miles today. And he did it super fast! Well done Dan! You're awesome!

Triple Threat Month - Gig 2 - White Rabbits

I love the White Rabbits. I loved them before last night. Now I love them even more.

So this was my first gig at Night and Day in Manchester. Night and Day is just behind Afflecks, across the road from Forbidden Planet. It's an 18+ venue, so the crowd were considerably older. Like late 20s. But the staff were friendly, they sell Kopparberg and for a reasonable price (UBER WIN!).
I did find it annoying how people talked during the set. The band even made a sly dig when they thanked the people standing near the stage (a.k.a. the people who were listening, politely). But I would definitely go there again. But not alone. It's not an alone gig kind of place. I was very relieved I'd dragged Danny along with me.

So, White Rabbits. Well, they're very easy on the eyes, ears and tongue. Good looking boys. Slick, deliciously paced tunes. And lyrics that sound like the whisperings of punch drunk lovers. Yes, they have it all and I can't believe they're not on a bigger stage. I say, give it time, it shall happen.

Right now, I'm keepin my fingers crossed for a Leeds Fest appearance.

Triple Threat Month - Gig 1 - Florence and the Machine

So May is Gig Month. And I'm not complaining. Florence and The Machine was a gig we planned way in advance so when it finally arrived it was kind of... a shock.

But a good kind. Like when you find a fiver in the pocket of those shorts you haven't worn since last summer. Result.

I LOVE the Empress Ballroom. Toni and I went to the most memorable White Stripes gig there. The place is absolutely beautiful. The bar is extensive (and all the staff are in suits!). But best of all, the floor moves. Seriously. When people jump, the floor is spring loaded underneath so you start to bounce up and down without even having to move yourself. And Florence was very into the pogo-ing.

I was ridiculously happy when Urky informed me that The Drums were supporting! I tried to get tickets to see them a few months ago but they sold out too quick. Needless to say, The Drums are an almost perfect support - fun, accesible, unfathomably cute and charming. The lead singer likes to dance and make friends and I'm fairly certain he made a couple thousand that night.

Did you know Florence Welch is only 22? You can tell when she speaks. Her voice is very girlish and sweet, a surprise in comparison to her powerful vocals (and they're just as good live). I wondered how she'd fair - only one album and an hour and a half to fill? But the setlist was good. An even scattering of singles amongst album tracks and new material. She had the audience in the palm of her hand because she was just so endearing. I'd expected she'd annoy me, but she comes across very sincere and nice. Weird, right?

She twirled and screamed and giggled and chatted and, before I knew it, an hour and a half had passed and she was bidding us adieu.

I'm always happy when my expectations are surpassed.

Dear Mr. Dickhead

You. Yes, you; with the headphones and laptop. I saw you. When the train pulled in you plonked your fat ass right in front of the doors. Don't you realise that people need to get off the train before you can get on? Do you even realise that other people exist?

No, perhaps that's why you shoulder barged the train driver in your hurry to get on the train and plonk your HUMONGOUS ARSE on a seat.

You're a dickhead. No one thinks you're cool just because you're watching a DVD while you commute. It's Sherlock Holmes for fucks' sake. Robert Downey Jnr has not been cool since... well, ever.

Just like you.

Yours faithfully,
Someone who knows proper train ettiquette

My New Favourite Thing

I'm sure somewhere my best friend/genius is laughing/cursing me as she reads this. She used to have a thing for eating gherkins right out of the jar. With cheese.

Thankfully, I don't do that. It started out with me noming gherkins on my burgers. Then my Subs. And now my sandwiches. They're AMAZING with chicken. Zingy little blighters turning an ordinary sandwich into a taste extravaganza!

Plus they're green XD

Oh heaven help me

All my dreams have come true! Boys fighting! Boys pretending not to care! Jealous boys!

Oh, it's a romance writer's dream!

*Ahem* So I know I haven't mentioned it in a while, but I am battling to finish my list. It seems impossible right now, but slowly the numbers dwindle. Like I finished Emma this week (boy, oh boy was that one hell of a slog!) so I only have one Jane Austen novel left! As for the list, I do have one really big one left that I'm kind of... scared shitless about. So if you're around right now, expect me to be calling on you for some... help.

How mysterious!

Also, I VOTED! It was my first general election. I missed out on the last one by like a month and it was a huge deal when I was at college. So I felt very much left out. What I never understand is why they give you a pencil to make your X with. It makes me paranoid that they just erase my political opinion and force theirs upon me. Still, they'd need a lot of erasers. Maybe next time I'll sneak a pen in with me! Damn, I'm a rebel!

Of course the Lib Dems did piss poor this time. Yet it is still rather satisfying to observe Nick Clegg considering his options as both Labour and the Tories beg, plead and grovel for him to come to their party. It kind of makes me think of those high school films where the loser is remade as the King of the School.

And no thanks go to the well meaning idiot who said 'hey Karen, wanna go on the new final fantasy?' Oh yeah, that was a great idea! Did you know that a PS3 is £240?! I don't have that kind of cash to throw around. Especially not on something as painfully addictive as Final Fantasy! Nope, I'm going FF cold turkey! No more for me!

Super! Marathon

So we kicked things off with X-Men (and an argument about the coolest mutant - it's so obviously Rogue) and we just polished off Spiderman (much drooling over James Franco ensued).

Al' is insisting that we watch Flash Gordon next but I'm hoping for Jay and Silent Bob since we all know Bluntman and Chronic are the greatest super heroes of all time!

You like my new hat?

I was gonna go out but now I'm not. But don't feel sorry for me - I have the latest ep of 10 things cued up and ready to rock! And I might even go crazy and curl my hair tonight. Maybe even do my nails?!

Yes, it's official. I have no social life XD

But I have rollers and Patrick Verona.
